Can a US Citizen Rent a Car in Dubai? Rules & Requirements 2026

Yes. A US citizen can rent a car in Dubai with a passport and a valid US driving licence, and our team confirms whether an International Driving Permit is also needed for your licence. Americans enter the UAE visa-free, drive on the right just like at home, and every car has its own age limit.

Most of the paperwork is the same as at a rental desk in Phoenix or Miami. The differences are a possible IDP that is best sorted out before you fly, an age limit that depends on the car, and a handful of road rules that behave differently from the US. This guide covers the documents, the licence rules for visitors and residents, the American cars in our fleet with their current prices, and what changes once you are behind the wheel. It also covers the current US travel advisory for the UAE, because it affects anyone planning a trip.

What a US Citizen Needs to Rent a Car in Dubai

Bring originals, not photos on a phone. The table shows the full checklist for an American visitor.

Documents and conditions for a US citizen renting a car at Brook Drive
Item What you need Good to know
Passport Original US passport Valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive
Entry permit Visa-free entry for US citizens No visa to apply for in advance; check the permitted stay before you fly
Driving licence Valid US licence, plastic card Must cover the whole rental
International Driving Permit Depends on the country that issued your licence Our team confirms what applies before you book; if one is needed, it cannot be arranged after you land
Age and experience From 21 to 25 years, 3 or 5 years of driving Set per car on its page
Deposit No security deposit The manager confirms it for your exact car

Passport and Visa

US citizens with a regular passport are on the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs list of visa-free nationalities, so there is no visa to apply for before the flight. Khaleej Times reported in June 2026 that this means a stay of up to 90 days within 180 days. Confirm the current figure on the ICP website before you fly. The passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date, as the UAE government portal states.

Age, Experience and Payment

There is no single age limit. Every car card on the site shows its own minimum age and minimum years of driving, and the more powerful the car, the higher both numbers. We accept cash, cards and cryptocurrency. Brook Drive rents with no deposit, and the manager confirms the terms for your exact car.

Helpful tip

Message us on WhatsApp at +971 58 642 7299 with the car you like, the dates and your licence details before you fly. We confirm the age and experience limit for that exact car and whether you need an IDP, so you know at home whether you qualify.

Is a US Driver’s Licence Valid in Dubai?

For a short visit, yes. Whether you also need an International Driving Permit depends on the country that issued your licence, and our team confirms it before you book. The answer is different if you move to the UAE.

For Visitors

The UAE lets tourists from many countries drive on a home licence, and Gulf News lists the United States among them. Tourists need a passport and a valid home-country licence. Depending on the country that issued your licence, an International Driving Permit may also be required, and our team confirms what applies to your licence before you book.

An IDP is a translation booklet that you carry together with the original licence. It does not replace the licence.

For Residents

Once you hold UAE residency you drive on a UAE licence. The United States is on the list of countries whose licence holders can exchange it for a UAE one without a theory or road test, provided you have a residence visa and an Emirates ID. The exchange is done through RTA.

A resident rents with the UAE licence and the Emirates ID.

How to Get an IDP in the United States

If our team asks you for an IDP, only two organisations are authorised by the US Department of State to issue it: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). USA.gov warns about websites that sell «international driver’s licences», and many of them are scams. An IDP is valid for one year and cannot be renewed, so order a new one for each trip that falls in a different year.

The permit has to be issued by the country that issued your licence, so it cannot be applied for in the UAE. AAA issues it at its offices after you show your licence and photos. Allow time before the flight and do not leave it for the last week.

Alex Shvarov
Helpful tip

If you do get an IDP, put it in the same pouch as the passport and the licence. The documents are checked together at the handover, which takes about 20 minutes.

Before You Fly: Entry Rules and the US Advisory

The Current State Department Advisory

The US State Department rates the United Arab Emirates Level 3, «Reconsider Travel». The advisory cites the threat of armed conflict and terrorism that followed the start of hostilities between the United States and Iran in February 2026, including a risk of drone and missile attacks and disruption to commercial flights. It is updated regularly, so read the current text and its date before you book. This guide covers rental rules and does not assess security.

What Practical Steps Make Sense

Check the wording on travel.state.gov and the US Embassy and Consulate in the UAE website, because the level and the details can change. Confirm that your flight and hotel have flexible terms. If you go, enrol in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, so that the embassy can reach you in an emergency.

Helpful tip

Book the car for the day you collect it, not the day you land, if you are jet-lagged. We hand cars over 24/7, so a night arrival is not a problem, but a first drive after a long flight is better done in daylight.

How Age Limits Fall Across American Models

Age limits on American models follow the same logic as the rest of the fleet: only the Tahoe has cars open from 21, many models from 23 and most of the big V8 and electric cars from 25. Most ask for 3 years of driving, and the most powerful versions ask for 5. If you are 23 or 24, the muscle cars and the Tahoe are the easiest American cars to book. The car page is the final word on each limit.

What the Rental Includes and What Is Billed Later

The base rate is simple, and a few items are billed after the rental. Knowing the list in advance prevents surprises on the final bill.

Included in the Daily Rate

  • Basic insurance
  • Free child seats
  • Support and handover round the clock, 24/7
  • Payment by cash, card or cryptocurrency

Paid Separately

  • Salik toll gates in Dubai and Darb gates in Abu Dhabi, billed to you separately after the rental ends
  • Traffic fines, forwarded to you and paid after the rental
  • Fuel: the car is handed over full and returned full
  • Delivery: free from AED 10,000; otherwise in Dubai AED 185 from 09:00 to 21:00 or AED 235 from 21:00 to 09:00, plus 5% VAT, and from AED 300 to DXB airport
  • Extended insurance, if you want it: ask the manager for the price

Insurance and Damage

Basic insurance is part of the daily rate. The excess and what the cover excludes are set out in your rental agreement and in the rental terms. Any damage, even a scratch left in a car park while you were away, needs a Police Report, so call us first and follow our instructions.

Mileage, Fuel and Where You Can Go

Every car has its own daily mileage limit, between 200 and 250 km, shown on its page, and extra kilometres are charged separately. Trips are within the UAE only, and driving into Oman is not allowed. Smoking in the car is not allowed. If the car breaks down, contact us and we collect it and give you another one.

Longer Rentals

If you stay for a month or more, the daily rate drops, by up to 50% on some cars. For example, the Tahoe falls from AED 830 a day for 1 to 2 days to AED 590 a day for 30 days or more, and the Escalade from AED 1190 to AED 770.

Alex Shvarov
Helpful tip

Keep your own list of trips through Salik gates, so that any charge dated outside your rental is easy to check when the bill arrives.

Driving in Dubai vs the US: What Changes

You drive on the right, the steering wheel is on the left, and the signs are in English as well as Arabic, so the first kilometre feels familiar. The surprises come at the traffic lights, in the units and in how strictly the rules are enforced by cameras.

US habits and the Dubai rule that replaces them
At home In Dubai
Speed limits in mph Limits and speedometer in km/h
Right turn on red is often allowed Treat a red light as a full stop and turn only on a green signal or arrow
A phone at the wheel is a risk AED 960 and 4 black points
Fuel priced per gallon Fuel priced per litre, fixed nationwide each month
Tolls at booths or with a transponder Salik gates charge a car automatically as it drives through
Parking at a meter Paid parking is usually paid through an app, SMS or a machine

Cameras, Speed and Red Lights

Dubai relies on automatic cameras rather than patrols, so even small violations come back as electronic fines. Running a red light carries a fine of AED 1,000 and 12 black points, and the car can be impounded for 30 days, according to the Dubai Police table of violations. If the car is impounded because of a violation during the rental, the release fee and related costs are the renter’s responsibility under the rental agreement. Speeding fines scale with how far over the limit you are.

Fines are forwarded to the renter and paid after the rental, so a mistake on day two is still your bill on day ten. If you want to look a fine up yourself, the Dubai Police fine-payment page works by plate number.

Tolls: Salik and Darb

Since June 2026 Salik adds 5% VAT, so a gate crossing costs AED 6.30 at peak and AED 4.20 off-peak from Monday to Saturday, with no charge from 01:00 to 06:00. On Sundays a flat AED 4.20 applies (Khaleej Times, tariffs on salik.ae). You do not register or top anything up. Salik is billed to you separately after the rental ends. Abu Dhabi has its own system, Darb, which is billed in the same way.

Fuel Costs

The UAE Fuel Price Committee sets one price for the whole country each month. In October 2026 Special 95 cost AED 4.28 a litre and Super 98 AED 4.40, as published by Gulf News. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, so Special 95 came to about AED 16.2 a gallon, or roughly $4.40 at the fixed rate of AED 3.6725 to the dollar (our conversion). Prices change on the first day of each month.

Parking and Alcohol

Most central streets are paid parking, so check the zone sign and pay by app or at the Parkin payment page. For alcohol the rule is simple: do not drive after any drink. The legal limit is zero, as the UAE road safety guidance treats drink-driving as a serious offence.

Alex Shvarov
Helpful tip

Turn on the speed-limit alert in your navigation app and set it to km/h before you leave the pick-up point. The easiest mistake for an American driver is to read a 100 sign as 100 mph. It means 100 km/h, about 62 mph.

How to Rent as an American Visitor, Step by Step

  1. Confirm the documents. Message us your licence details. If an IDP is needed, apply to AAA or AATA a few weeks before the trip and check the licence expiry date.
  2. Choose the car. Check the age and experience limit on its page, or ask us on WhatsApp.
  3. Arrange delivery or pick-up. We deliver to hotels and homes in Dubai and to DXB airport. The delivery prices are in the list above.
  4. Show the documents. Passport, US licence and, if we asked for it, the IDP. Handover takes about 20 minutes.
  5. Return the car full. Fuel it up before the return. Tolls and fines are billed afterwards.

If you land at night, we work 24/7.

The Bottom Line

An American can rent a car in Dubai with a short list of papers: a passport and a US licence, plus an IDP from AAA or AATA if our team says your licence needs one. Choose a car whose age limit you meet, set the navigation to km/h, stop fully at every red light, and expect the tolls and any fines on the bill after the rental. Read the State Department advisory before you book, because it is the one part of the trip that changes from month to month.

Alex Shvarov
Verdict

For a visiting American the only real preparation is the licence check with our team and the age check on the car you want. The Tahoe, Mustang, Camaro and Challenger are the easiest American cars to book from 21 to 23, and the Escalade and Corvette are the ones to take from 25.

FAQ

Can a US citizen rent a car in Dubai?

Yes. An American visitor needs a passport and a valid US driving licence, and must meet the age and experience limit of the car. Our team confirms whether an International Driving Permit is also needed for your licence before you book.

Do Americans need an International Driving Permit in Dubai?

The UAE lets visitors from many countries, including the United States, drive on their home licence. Whether an IDP is also required for your rental depends on the country that issued the licence, and our team confirms what applies before you book. If you need one, get it from AAA or AATA before you travel, because it cannot be issued in the UAE.

Do US citizens need a visa for the UAE?

No visa is needed in advance: US citizens are on the UAE visa-free list. The passport should be valid for at least six months from arrival. Check the permitted length of stay with ICP and the current State Department advisory before booking.

What is the minimum age for an American to rent a car in Dubai?

It depends on the car, between 21 and 25 years. Some Chevrolet Tahoe cars are open from 21, the Mustang and Camaro convertibles from 23, and the Escalade and Corvette from 25. Every car also needs 3 or 5 years of driving experience.

Can I keep using my US licence if I move to Dubai?

Not for long. A resident drives on a UAE licence. US licence holders can exchange it without tests once they have a residence visa and an Emirates ID.

Which side of the road do they drive on in Dubai?

On the right, as in the US. The main differences are speeds in km/h, red lights treated as a full stop, and automatic camera enforcement.

How much does fuel cost in Dubai?

In October 2026 Special 95 cost AED 4.28 a litre, about $4.40 a gallon at the fixed exchange rate. The UAE sets one price for the whole country, and it changes on the first day of each month, so check the current figure.
