Is It Allowed to Drive Under the Influence in Dubai?

No, it is not allowed to drive after drinking in Dubai, in any amount. The UAE applies zero tolerance to alcohol at the wheel: since the new federal traffic law took effect in March 2025, a drink-driving conviction can mean imprisonment, a fine of AED 20,000 to AED 100,000, licence suspension and a rental car impounded for 60 days. This guide covers what the law says, what it means when the car is rented, and how to carry alcohol legally.

There is no «safe» glass. The UAE applies zero tolerance: no amount of alcohol is allowed in a driver’s system, so any detectable alcohol during a breath or blood test is an offence. This differs from countries where 0.05% or 0.08% is tolerated, and it applies to every driver whatever their nationality, visa or car.

The rule also covers the morning after. Alcohol leaves the body at a rate that varies with weight, food and metabolism, so there is no reliable formula for working out when you are clear. If you have been drinking the night before an early drive, the safe answer is to take a taxi or let someone else drive.

Where the rule comes from

The current framework is Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on traffic regulation, which the UAE government portal lists as in effect since March 2025. According to Gulf News’ summary of the law, anyone who drives or attempts to drive under the influence of alcohol faces imprisonment and a fine of AED 20,000 to AED 100,000, or one of the two. Attempting to drive is enough: you do not have to be moving.

Penalties for drink-driving in Dubai

Drink-driving is handled on two tracks at once: the criminal court decides the punishment, and the traffic authorities apply administrative measures on top of it.

Penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol in Dubai
Penalty What applies
Court sentence Imprisonment and a fine of AED 20,000 to AED 100,000, or one of the two
Licence Suspended for at least 3 months on a first offence, 6 months on a second, cancelled on a third
Black points 23 black points, one short of the 24-point suspension threshold
Vehicle Impounded for 60 days

The fine amount for the traffic violation itself is set by the court, so the figures in the table are a range and not a fixed price. The black points and the 60-day impoundment are listed in the Dubai Police black points table.

Visitors and residents

A drink-driving case is a criminal matter, not just a traffic ticket. The same law applies to residents, visitors and citizens, and nationality makes no difference. Treat it as a risk that is not worth taking for a single evening.

Helpful tip

If you plan to drink, do not collect the car that day. Book it for the next morning, or arrange a taxi or ride-hailing car for the evening and keep the rental for daytime driving.

What it means when the car is a rental

A rental car adds a second layer of cost, because you are responsible to the owner as well as to the law. The basic insurance included in the daily rate is there for ordinary accidents; it does not give you cover for an offence such as driving under the influence.

Insurance and liability

If you crash while over the limit, expect the insurance cover to be refused, which leaves you responsible for the damage to the rental car, to other vehicles and to property, and for any injured people. What the cover excludes, and what you must reimburse to the rental company, is set out in your rental agreement and in our terms and conditions. Any damage to a rental car also needs a police report, and a drink-driving case makes that report part of a criminal file.

The exposure grows with the value of the car: the more expensive the car, the bigger the repair bill and the longer it may stay out of service, and both would fall on the driver.

Impoundment

The 60-day impoundment applies to the car in your hands. For a rental, that means the car is off the road for two months, and the renter is responsible for the consequences: the police pound’s fees and the rental company’s lost days. Do not count on the rental agreement to protect you from it.

Carrying alcohol in a rental car

Transporting alcohol you bought legally is a different thing from drinking and driving. Buy only from licensed outlets or duty-free shops, keep the bottles sealed, and keep them out of reach, in the boot or in a closed compartment rather than the cabin. Rules on alcohol can change, so check the current requirements before you rely on this.

Space matters here, so take a car with a proper boot. Three of the roomier cars in our fleet are listed below, with live prices for a 1 to 2 day rental.

How to plan a night out without the car

The simplest rule is to separate the evening from the keys. Most visitors who are caught are not heavy drinkers: they had «just one» and assumed it was fine. A few habits keep you safely on the right side of the law.

Practical options

  • Taxi or ride-hailing: widely available in Dubai and cheap compared with any fine. The RTA Dubai app (App Store, Google Play) helps you plan the trip. Leave the rental parked at the hotel for the evening.
  • Metro and tram: good for Downtown, the Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence, where most restaurants and bars cluster.
  • A sober driver: if one person in the group stays at zero, they must not have had even one drink, because no amount of alcohol is allowed.
  • Split the rental days: keep the car for daytime plans and nights when you will not drink. The minimum rental is one day, and there is no hourly rental.

If you collect a car in the morning after a late night, think honestly about how many hours it has been since your last drink. When in doubt, wait, or ask the manager to bring the car later in the day. Delivery within Dubai is free on orders from AED 10,000 and otherwise AED 185 between 09:00 and 21:00 and AED 290 between 21:00 and 09:00, plus 5% VAT.

Drugs, medicines and other rules for drivers

The same law covers driving under the influence of drugs, and it is stricter: according to Gulf News, driving under the influence of narcotic or psychotropic substances carries imprisonment and/or a fine of AED 30,000 to AED 200,000, with a first-offence licence suspension of six months.

Prescription medicines

Some medicines that are sold freely in other countries, including certain painkillers and sedatives, are controlled substances in the UAE; the UAE government guide to controlled medicines explains which ones need a permit. If you take any regular medication, carry the prescription, check its status with a UAE doctor or pharmacist before you travel, and do not drive if it makes you drowsy. If you are unsure whether a medicine affects driving, ask a doctor or pharmacist.

Smoking in the car

Smoking is not allowed in Brook Drive cars, and the cabins are kept clean between rentals. If you travel with children, keep the car smoke-free in any case.

Verdict

Decide before the evening starts how you will get home. A taxi costs a fraction of the price of one night in a police cell, and none of the fines or the impoundment can be bought off afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is any alcohol allowed when driving in Dubai?

No. The UAE applies zero tolerance, so any detectable alcohol in a breath or blood test is an offence.

Can I be tested the morning after drinking?

Yes. If alcohol is still detectable in your system, you can be charged even if you feel sober. Take a taxi if you drank the night before an early drive.

What is the penalty for drink-driving in Dubai?

Imprisonment and a fine of AED 20,000 to AED 100,000, or one of the two, under the federal traffic law in force since March 2025. In addition, the licence is suspended, 23 black points are added and the car is impounded for 60 days.

Does the rental insurance cover an accident if I was drunk?

You should expect not to be covered. The basic insurance included in a Brook Drive rental covers ordinary accidents, not offences such as driving under the influence, so the damage would be yours to pay.

Can I carry alcohol in a rental car?

Buy alcohol only from licensed outlets or duty-free, keep the bottles sealed and out of the cabin, for example in the boot. Rules can change, so check the current requirements before you rely on this.

What happens to the rental car if I am arrested?

It can be impounded for 60 days. The renter is responsible for the consequences, including the days the car is out of service.

Are the rules different for tourists?

No. The same law applies to tourists, residents and citizens, and a visitor can be prosecuted just like a local driver.
