Dubai speeding fines run from AED 300 for up to 20 km/h over the limit to AED 3,000, 23 black points and a 60-day impound for more than 80 km/h over. Here is the full schedule, plus what a rental driver needs to know.
Dubai Speeding Fines Schedule
| Over the speed limit | Fine | Black points | Impound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 20 km/h | AED 300 | 0 | None |
| 21–30 km/h | AED 600 | 0 | None |
| 31–40 km/h | AED 700 | 0 | None |
| 41–50 km/h | AED 1,000 | 0 | None |
| 51–60 km/h | AED 1,500 | 6 | 15 days |
| 61–80 km/h | AED 2,000 | 12 | 30 days |
| More than 80 km/h | AED 3,000 | 23 | 60 days |
The bands come from Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017, the federal table that Dubai Police also publishes in its black points table. One caveat: the Dubai Police web table currently shows the row for more than 80 km/h with the same AED 2,400, 12 points and 30 days as the row for more than 60 km/h, while the Resolution gives AED 3,600, 23 points and 60 days. If the exact figure matters, confirm it with Dubai Police on 901.
Up to 40 km/h over: fines only
The first three bands cost AED 300, 600 or 700 and carry no black points and no impound. The fine is the whole penalty: no black points are added.
41 to 50 km/h over: AED 1,000, still no points
This is the biggest jump in money, from AED 840 to AED 1,200, but black points do not start here. They begin one band later, at 51 km/h over.
51 km/h over and above: points and impound
From 51 km/h over, the fine comes with black points and the car is impounded: 6 points and 15 days, then 12 points and 30 days, then 23 points and 60 days. A single 23-point offence leaves you one point below the maximum of 24.
Helpful tipAn impound means the car is off the road for 15 to 60 days. In a rental, the release fee and related costs are the renter’s responsibility under the rental agreement, so a high-band fine costs far more than the amount in the table.

The 20 km/h Radar Buffer: Dubai vs Abu Dhabi
Dubai Police publishes a radar control speed for each road, the speed at which a camera is set to trigger. For most roads it is the posted limit plus 21 km/h: 101 on an 80 km/h road, 121 on a 100 km/h road and 141 on a 120 km/h road. The list is on the Street Speed Limits page, which Dubai Police dated January 2026, and a few roads differ, so check the one you are driving.
Gulf News describes the same buffer as typically 20 km/h above the posted limit and warns that it is not permission to exceed the limit. Dubai Police does not say whether the fine bands count from the posted limit or from the radar control speed, so do not plan around the buffer.
Abu Dhabi has run a zero-tolerance system since 2018, with no buffer, according to Gulf News (September 2026). Reset the habit when you cross the emirate border.
New limits from November 2026
Gulf News reports new limits on five Dubai roads from November 2026, with the cameras reprogrammed to match: Al Asayel Street from 60 to 80 km/h, Al Mustaqbal Street from 60 to 70, Latifa bint Hamdan Street from 60 to 70, Al Rebat Street from 100 to 90 and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street from 80 to 70. The Dubai Police list above predates these changes, so on these roads trust the sign.
Helpful tipTreat the buffer as a camera setting, not as a speed you are allowed to drive. Drive to the posted limit, and read the signs on roads you drove last month, because limits are changing.

Severe Offenses and Release Fees (Decree 30 of 2023)
Dubai Decree No. 30 of 2023 sets what the owner pays to release a car impounded in the most serious cases: AED 120,000 for taking part in a road race without a permit; AED 60,000 for running a red light, reckless driving, or fake, forged or obscured number plates; and AED 12,000 for substantial modifications that raise speed or noise, escaping from police, driving without plates, road stunts and gatherings, or window tint above the permitted level. Traffic fines above AED 6,000 recorded against a vehicle are also grounds for impoundment, and the car is released once its owner pays them.
Speeding impounds come from Resolution 178, not from the decree’s list. For those, the decree lets the owner release a light vehicle by paying AED 120 for each day of the impound period, or of the days remaining.
Other Dubai Traffic Fines (Non-Speeding)
Speeding is only part of the schedule. The table lists the fines drivers meet most often, taken from the Dubai Police black points table.
| Violation | Fine | Black points | Impound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-held phone while driving | AED 800 | 4 | None |
| Failure to leave a safe distance | AED 400 | 4 | None |
| Driver not wearing a seatbelt | AED 400 | 4 | None |
| Sudden swerving | AED 1,000 | 4 | None |
| Overtaking from the hard shoulder | AED 1,000 | 6 | None |
| Driving against traffic | AED 600 | 4 | 7 days |
| Running a red light | AED 1,000 | 12 | 30 days |
| Parking in a space for people with special needs | AED 1,000 | 6 | None |
| Improper parking | AED 500 | 0 | None |
Phone, following distance and seatbelt
Each of these costs AED 480 to AED 960 and adds 4 black points. The Dubai Police table lists no impound for any of them.
Salik fines
A Salik toll is not a fine: it is charged each time you pass a gate. At Brook Drive, Salik is billed to the renter separately after the rental ends. Salik fines apply only when a vehicle without a registered tag passes a gate, or when the account balance runs too low. According to Gulf News (August 2026), a tag must be registered within 10 working days of the first trip, and after that the fine is AED 100, then AED 200, then AED 400 for each further offence. A balance that is not topped up within five working days is fined AED 50. Only one violation per day per vehicle is counted.
Understanding the Dubai Black Points System
Black points are recorded against the driver. A violation is registered against the car’s plate first, and Dubai Police’s Black Points Transfer service moves the points from the vehicle’s record to a driver’s record.
The maximum is 24 black points. Once a driver reaches it, the case goes to court, and the court can suspend or confiscate the licence for a period it sets. Points lapse one year after the violation, according to Gulf News (May 2024). Failing to hand over the licence when the maximum is reached is itself fined AED 1,000, AED 2,000 and AED 3,000 for the first, second and third time.
Helpful tipPoints expire one year after each violation, so a clean year brings the count down. A single 23-point offence leaves almost no room for anything else in that window.

Managing Traffic Fines for Rental Cars in Dubai
Tourists and residents driving rental cars are fully subject to local traffic law, whether the car is an exotic Ferrari or Lamborghini, a Rolls Royce or BMW, a practical SUV or an economy car. A camera fine is registered against the car’s plate, and anyone can look it up by plate number on the Dubai Police service.
At Brook Drive there is no deposit: fines are forwarded to the renter and paid after the rental, and Salik and Darb are billed to the renter separately after the rental ends. If a car is impounded because of a violation during the rental, the release fee and related costs are the renter’s responsibility under the rental terms.
Helpful tipCheck the plate on the official services before you return the car, and again after the rental ends. A fine can show up with a delay, and a clear screen on day one does not guarantee a clear record.

How to Check and Pay Dubai Traffic Fines Online
Use official government platforms only. Third-party sites that offer to check or clear a fine for you carry a risk of phishing.
Dubai Police: Fines Inquiry and Payment
Speeding fines are issued by Dubai Police, so start with its Fines Inquiry and Payment service, also in the Dubai Police app for iPhone and Android. Search by plate number, driving licence or traffic code. Online you can pay by card or Apple Pay; at service centres and Smart Police Stations, with cash or a debit card. Each violation adds a knowledge fee and an innovation fee of AED 10 each. Online payments are accepted only with cards issued in the UAE or GCC countries. The service also lets you view the radar images behind a fine (Violation Evidence Images).
RTA: public fines search and the RTA Dubai app
RTA runs its own public fines search and the RTA Dubai app for iPhone and Android. Use them as a second place to check, since speeding fines come from Dubai Police.
Fines from other emirates
A fine from a road trip to Abu Dhabi is registered there, and the Abu Dhabi government portal is TAMM. For Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, use the MOI UAE app for iPhone or Android.
How to Contest and Dispute Traffic Fines in Dubai
If a fine looks wrong, such as the wrong plate, time or road, ask Dubai Police for a Violation Review, a formal request to reassess the recorded details. View the radar images first, and attach any evidence you have, such as dashcam footage.
Dubai Public Prosecution also takes online objections to unpaid fines. According to Gulf News (May 2025), the explanation must be written in Arabic and the application asks for an Emirates ID, and a decision typically takes up to 10 working days. That route suits residents more than visitors.
Helpful tipDispute before you pay. A paid fine counts as accepted, and the online objection route is open only for unpaid fines.

FAQ
How much is a speeding fine in Dubai?
From AED 360 for up to 20 km/h over the limit to AED 3,600, 23 black points and a 60-day impound for more than 80 km/h over. Black points start at 51 km/h over the limit.
What speed triggers a speed camera in Dubai?
Dubai Police lists a radar control speed for each road, usually the posted limit plus 21 km/h: 101 on an 80 km/h road and 121 on a 100 km/h road. Treat it as a camera setting, not as permission to speed.
Can unpaid fines get a car impounded?
Yes. Under Decree No. 30 of 2023, a vehicle with more than AED 7,200 in recorded traffic fines is subject to impoundment, and it is released once its owner pays the fines.
Can tourists driving rental cars check fines directly?
Yes. Dubai Police finds fines by the rental car’s plate number. Online payment works only with UAE or GCC cards, and with Brook Drive fines are forwarded to the renter and paid after the rental.
Do traffic fine discounts apply in Dubai?
Dubai Police does not list a discount on speeding fines. Discount campaigns of up to 50% have been run by other emirates, so check official Dubai Police announcements before relying on a figure you read elsewhere.
