In Dubai, a car rental company must release your security deposit within 30 days of the return if nothing is owed. In practice the wait is often weeks. Brook Drive does not take a security deposit, which changes what happens after the return.
The 30 days is a ceiling, not a promise, and the reasons for the delay are mostly outside the renter’s control: traffic fines and toll charges reach the rental company slowly. This guide explains the rule behind the deadline, what happens to your money during those weeks, which deductions are legitimate, what to do when a refund is late, and how a rental with no deposit changes the picture.
How Long a Deposit Refund Takes in Dubai
The deadline comes from the regulator. Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) says a rental company must release your deposit within a maximum of 30 days after you return the car, provided there are no additional charges or violations. The rule was set out in Circular No. 1 of 2024 from the Dubai Corporation for Consumer Protection and Fair Trade, which works under DET, and it applies to companies licensed in Dubai.
| How the deposit was taken | How it is returned | Transfer fee |
|---|---|---|
| Card hold (pre-authorisation) | Released back to the same card; the hold may not be processed as a charge | None, the hold is released rather than paid out |
| Cash | In cash or by bank transfer | Paid by the company |
| Debit card | By bank transfer or in cash | Paid by the company |
The same 30 days applies whichever way you paid. What changes is the route the money takes: a card hold goes back to the card it came from, while cash and debit deposits depend on a manual refund by the company.
Most companies place a temporary block on the renter’s credit card instead of taking cash (Gulf News, 2025, updated October 2026), and the amount varies by company and by vehicle type. No published source sets a typical figure for the Dubai market, so a number quoted by one company says little about the next one.
Helpful tipBefore you pay, ask one question: is this amount blocked on my card or charged to it? A hold that is «blocked» must come back to the same card within 30 days. If the agent says «charged», get the refund terms in writing before you sign.

Why Refunds Take Weeks: Fines and Salik
The delay is rarely about the rental company counting your money. It is about waiting to find out whether anything was charged to the car while you had it.
Fines and Tolls Do Not Arrive Instantly
A traffic fine is registered against the car, not against the renter, so the rental company is the first to see it. Gulf News notes that companies often wait for fines to be posted and that this «can take several weeks». Salik toll charges follow the same logic: they are tied to the car’s tag and billed to the company afterwards.
Why the Company Keeps the Hold Open
If the company released your deposit on day three and a fine arrived on day twenty, it would have no money left to cover it. So it holds the deposit until the period in which a fine could still appear has passed. That is the logic behind a deposit, and it is also why 30 days has become the standard ceiling rather than a few days.
Disputes Make It Longer
If you contest a fine with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) or Dubai Police, the final amount is not known until the case is closed. Some companies wait for that before releasing the deposit, so ask for the company’s position in writing.
Helpful tipDo not wait for the company to tell you about a fine. A week or two after the return, check your own fines on the Dubai Police fines inquiry or through RTA channels, using the car’s plate number from your contract. If something is there, ask the company how it wants the fine paid before you pay it yourself: it may already be taken from your deposit.

The Refund Process, Step by Step
Companies differ in the details, but a deposit-based rental usually follows the same five stages after you hand the keys back.
1. Return and Inspection
The company inspects the car against the handover condition: body, wheels, interior, fuel level and mileage. A signed return note or a time-stamped photo set protects you if something is disputed later.
2. Waiting for Fines and Tolls
This is the longest stage. The company watches for fines and toll charges registered to the car during your rental dates. Nothing happens to your deposit while it waits.
3. Final Calculation
If nothing is owed, the full amount is due back. If something is owed, the company works out the deductions and should be able to show you what each one is for.
4. Release or Refund
A card hold is released to the card. A cash or debit deposit is returned by transfer or in cash. Your bank then needs a few days to show the money, and the timing depends on the card issuer.
5. Partial Refund, If Something Was Deducted
The balance comes back to you, with a breakdown of what was taken and why. Without a breakdown, ask for one.
What Can Be Deducted From Your Deposit
Deductions have to match something real. The circular allows a company to deduct the actual cost of traffic offences and vehicle damage during the rental, plus administrative fees, and it bans any surcharge for paying by credit card or payment app (Khaleej Times). Gulf News and Khaleej Times add tolls (Salik), fuel, late return and mileage as items companies commonly deduct, so the categories below mix the rule with common practice.
Traffic Fines and Salik
The most common deduction. Speed camera fines, parking tickets and toll charges registered to the car during your rental are taken from the deposit, sometimes with an administrative fee. The amount depends on the violation.
Damage Not Covered by Insurance
Scratches, dents, tyre damage or interior stains that the insurance does not cover come out of the deposit. In Dubai, any damage, even a scratch left in a car park while you were away from the car, needs a Police Report before an insurer will act on it.
Other Common Deductions
- Mileage above the limit: each rental sets a daily kilometre allowance, and kilometres above it are charged separately.
- Fuel: a car returned with less fuel than the agreement requires.
- Cleaning: heavy soiling or smoke smell, because smoking in a rental car is not allowed.
- Late return: hours past the agreed time are billed under the contract.

The more a car costs to repair, the more a company has at stake, which is why deposit amounts vary with the vehicle. If you are choosing a high-performance car such as the Lamborghini Huracan, ask what the hold is, how the damage terms work and where they are written down before you pay anything.
Helpful tipPhotograph every panel, the wheels, the dashboard with the odometer and the fuel gauge at pickup and again at the return, with time stamps. If a deduction appears later, these photos are your evidence.

What to Do If Your Deposit Is Late
If more than 30 days have passed since the return and the company confirmed there were no charges, work through these steps in order.
1. Ask the Company for a Written Status
Write to the company and ask whether the deposit was released or refunded, on what date and by which method. A written reply creates a record.
2. Check Your Bank Statement
A release can appear as a small credit entry without a «refund» label. Look for an amount that matches the deposit around the date the company gives you.
3. Ask for the ARN and Contact Your Bank
If the company says it refunded the money, ask for the Acquirer Reference Number (ARN), a 23-digit code that tracks a card transaction across banks. With the ARN, the transaction date and the amount, your bank can see whether the refund was sent. If the company cannot show any proof, your bank can advise on a formal dispute.
4. File a Complaint With DET
If the deposit is still not returned after the return of a car in good condition and without fines, you can file a complaint with the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Sector of DET, through the Dubai Consumer Rights platform or by calling +971 600 545555. The rules apply to companies licensed and based in Dubai with a DET trade licence. Keep the contract, receipts, return note, photos and the written exchange with the company, because the complaint is judged on those.
5. If You Have Already Left the UAE
You do not need to be in Dubai to complain, because the platform works online. Write to the company first and keep the reply. If money was charged to your card instead of being held, ask your bank about disputing the transaction. Have the contract, the receipt, the ARN and your messages with the company ready, and check in the contract that the company holds a DET trade licence.
Helpful tipKeep everything from the first day: the signed contract, the payment receipt, the handover and return photos and every message. Most deposit disputes are decided on whichever side can show dates, amounts and photos.

How Brook Drive Avoids the Wait
Brook Drive does not take a security deposit, and a credit card is not required: you can pay by cash, card or cryptocurrency. With no deposit, there is usually no refund to wait for. Our fleet has 450+ cars across 30+ brands, from economy hatchbacks to supercars. Before you book, check the terms for your specific car in the rental agreement.
What Is Different at Return
| After the return | Rental with a deposit | Brook Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Money held after the return | Yes, until it is released, up to 30 days | No deposit is held |
| Fines and Salik | Deducted from the deposit | Sent to you and paid by you after the rental |
| Damage | Taken from the deposit, balance refunded later | Basic insurance is included; the excess is set per car in your contract |
| Waiting for a refund | Up to 30 days | No deposit refund to wait for |

What Is Still Billed Separately
No deposit does not mean no costs. The following are not part of the daily rate and are billed separately:
- Salik and Darb tolls: Salik on Dubai roads and Darb at Abu Dhabi’s toll gates are billed to you separately after the rental ends.
- Traffic fines: a fine registered to the car during your rental is forwarded to you and paid after the rental.
- Fuel: full-to-full, so the car comes with a full tank and returns with a full tank.
- Mileage above the limit: every car has its own daily limit, 200 to 250 km, shown on its page; extra kilometres are charged separately.
- Damage: basic insurance is included in the daily rate. The excess and what the cover excludes are set out in your rental agreement (see the rental terms). Any damage needs a Police Report.
Four Cars and Their Daily Rates
| Car | 1–2 days | 30+ days | Minimum age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audi Q3 | AED 660 | AED 400 | 23 |
| Cadillac Escalade | AED 1190 | AED 770 | 25 |
| Mercedes G63 | AED 2 510 | AED 1 910 | 25 |
| Lamborghini Huracan EVO Spyder | AED 3 590 | AED 2 510 | 25 |
Minimum age and driving experience are set per car, so check the car’s page before you book. A rental for a month or longer costs up to 50% less per day than the 1–2 day rate. Prices apply to rentals starting within the next 30 days, seasonal rates may apply to later dates, and current offers are in Special Offer.
Helpful tipWhoever you rent from, ask three things in writing: is anything blocked on my card, what is the insurance excess for this exact car, and how and when are fines and tolls billed. Brook Drive answers all three before you pay.

VerdictIf a company takes a deposit, plan for a wait of up to 30 days and keep your own records so you can prove nothing is owed. If you would rather not tie up money at all, pick a rental with no deposit and read what is billed separately, because the costs do not disappear, they just move after the rental.

FAQ
When must a car rental deposit be returned in Dubai?
Within a maximum of 30 days after you return the car, if there are no additional charges or violations. This is the rule set by DET for companies licensed in Dubai. Thirty days is a ceiling, and many companies release the money sooner.
Does a card hold disappear automatically?
A hold is a reservation of funds, not a charge, and under the DET rules a rental office may not process it as an outright charge. It must be released to the same card within 30 days of the return. How fast your bank shows the money again depends on the card issuer.
Is a cash deposit returned faster than a card hold?
Not necessarily. The same 30-day limit applies, and cash is returned in cash or by bank transfer, with any transfer fee paid by the company. The wait comes from checking for fines and tolls, not from the payment method.
Why do fines delay a deposit refund?
Fines are registered against the car, and the rental company may only learn about them days or weeks later. Gulf News reports that posting «can take several weeks». The company keeps the deposit until that window has passed, so there is still money to cover a late fine.
What if I do not pay a fine after the rental?
An unpaid fine stays registered against the car and is forwarded to you after the rental, so it is best to pay it as soon as it arrives.
What can I do if the deposit is not returned after 30 days?
Ask the company for a written status, check your bank statement, request the ARN of the refund and give it to your bank. If the deposit is still missing, file a complaint with DET’s Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Sector through the Dubai Consumer Rights platform or by calling +971 600 545555. Complaints are accepted only against companies that hold a DET trade licence in Dubai.
Does Brook Drive take a deposit?

Salik, Darb and traffic fines are billed separately after the rental, fuel is full-to-full, extra kilometres above the car’s daily limit are charged separately, and basic insurance is included in the daily rate. You can pay by cash, card or cryptocurrency, and a credit card is not required. Check the terms for your specific car in the rental agreement before you book.
Is a luxury rental without a deposit available in Dubai?
Yes. Brook Drive does not take a security deposit, and its fleet includes luxury cars and sports cars. Age and driving experience requirements are set per car and shown on the car page.
