What to Do If You Scratch a Rental Car in Dubai: Complete Guide

A scratch on your rental car in Dubai does not have to turn into a billing dispute. Take photos first, file the right Police Report through the right app, call support, and keep every document until the final invoice.

Immediate Actions After a Rental Car Scratch

First things first: don’t panic. Take a breath and follow this sequence:

  1. Check that everyone is safe. Turn on your hazard lights.
  2. Decide whether to move the car. If the damage is purely cosmetic, nobody is hurt and there is no dispute about who is at fault, Dubai Police advise moving the vehicle to the side of the road once it is safe to do so. If moving it could affect how fault is determined, leave it exactly where it stopped.
  3. Take timestamped photos and video. Use several angles, keep the license plate visible, and do it before anything is touched. Enable location metadata on your phone.
  4. File a Police Report. At Brook Drive a report is needed for any damage, even a scratch found on a parked car. In Dubai use the Dubai Police app (App Store, Google Play) or DubaiNow. The table in Step 2 shows which service fits your situation.
  5. Contact Brook Drive support. Call or message +971 58 642 7299. The team works 24/7 and will walk you through documentation and next steps.

Send your first photos to support right away, before you start the report. It puts a timestamped copy of the evidence with Brook Drive before anyone asks for it.

Step 1: Is It Really Chargeable Damage?

Not every mark on a rental car qualifies as billable damage. Knowing the difference between normal wear and tear and actual damage protects you from unjustified charges.

What Counts as Normal Wear and Tear

There is no single UAE standard, so each rental company applies its own guidelines. In practice, these are the marks that are usually treated as wear:

  • Light surface marks: scratches that stay in the clear coat and do not reach the primer
  • Normal usage scuffs: light marks on door sills, step plates and door edge guards
  • Expected wear: minor clouding of headlight covers (not cracks) and stone chips on lower panels

What Typically Triggers Charges

This is where things get expensive:

  • Deep scratches that expose primer or metal
  • Dents, particularly on the roof or hood
  • Any damage to glass, lights or mirrors
  • Wheel rim curb damage: scuffs, gouges or deformation
  • Undercarriage scrapes from speed bumps or parking barriers

Helpful tip

Our fleet maintenance runs through our own in-house detailing center, Brooklands, so every vehicle leaves in pristine condition. On a premium model like the Rolls-Royce Ghost, even a tiny mark is obvious against factory-perfect paintwork, which is exactly why honest pre-rental documentation protects both sides.

Size matters with vehicle class. Large SUVs and trucks collect more bumper and running board scuffs, while a low sports car shows every curb touch. If you are renting a Land Rover in Dubai, look over the lower body panels before you drive off.

Step 2: Document the Evidence and File the Report

Proper documentation is your strongest defense against inflated claims and the basis of any insurance claim. Think of it as building your case before you need one.

Photo and Video Requirements

  • Capture multiple angles: a close-up of the damage, a wide shot showing the car in its surroundings, and images that include the license plate
  • Enable metadata: keep location services on so photos carry GPS coordinates and timestamps
  • Record a walk-around video: narrate what you are showing («front bumper, driver’s side, 3:42 PM, Al Wasl Road parking»)
  • Photograph the scene: include road signs, nearby vehicles, surveillance cameras and witnesses if there are any

UAE-Specific Requirement: The Police Report

In many countries a minor parking-lot scratch never involves the police. In the UAE a Police Report is part of any damage claim, and Brook Drive requires one for any damage, even a scratch on a parked car when you were not in it. Insurers and workshops expect the report number. For a cosmetic-only incident you do not need to dial 999, because the apps below handle it.

Which Service Fits Your Situation

Where to report a minor incident in the UAE, October 2026
Situation Where to report What it costs
Two cars, no injuries, drivers agree who is at fault Dubai Police app or DubaiNow AED 630 fine for the party found liable
Scratch on a parked car, the other driver is unknown or has left «Accident Report for Unknown Party» in the Dubai Police app, or a participating ENOC petrol station AED 510, report valid for three months
Injuries, a major accident, or drivers disagree about fault Call 999 The police decide who is liable
Outside Dubai MOI UAE app (App Store) covers Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates; Abu Dhabi also has the Saaed app; Sharjah also has Rafid Fees differ by emirate, check the app before paying

For a non-urgent question to Dubai Police, the number is 901. Calling 999 is for injuries, major accidents and disputes about fault.

Helpful tip

Skipping the report, even for a minor scratch, can mean a rejected insurance claim and a repair bill that lands on you. Leaving the scene of an accident is a traffic offence in its own right, so stay until the report is registered.

Step 3: Insurance and Liability: Who Pays?

Insurance for rental car damage in Dubai has several layers, each with its own limits and exclusions. Here is what actually protects you.

Rental Company Insurance (CDW/LDW)

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) are the usual names for the cover included with a rental, but they are not comprehensive:

  • What is typically covered: major collision damage, theft and fire
  • What is often excluded: undercarriage, tires and wheels, interior and glass. The exact list is in your contract, so read it before you drive off
  • The excess: you remain liable for damage costs up to the excess written into your agreement. It is set per vehicle, so it is not the same for a city hatchback and a supercar

At Brook Drive, basic insurance is included in the daily rate and the excess for your car is written in the rental contract. In an insured accident where the renter is at fault, the excess is the limit of the renter’s liability. If the renter is not at fault, no excess is paid. Any damage, even a scratch on a parked car, needs a Police Report.

Extended protection: Brook Drive also offers an upgraded insurance tier. Ask our team what it covers for the car you are booking and what it costs.

Credit Card Rental Insurance

Many premium credit cards offer rental car insurance as a benefit, but limitations apply:

  • Territory and rental type: check whether your card covers rentals in the UAE and cars of this value
  • Coverage type matters:
    • Primary coverage: pays first, before the rental company’s insurance
    • Secondary coverage: pays only after the rental company’s insurance is exhausted (more common, less valuable)
  • Vehicle class limits: many card policies exclude luxury and exotic vehicles or cap the car’s value

Real-world example: a card limit that is enough for a Mini Cooper S Convertible (from AED 590 a day) may not stretch to a Bentley Continental (from AED 3 120) or a Ferrari Roma (from AED 3 710). For luxury and exotic rentals, verify your card’s vehicle value limit and consider the rental company’s extended insurance instead.

Third-Party Excess Insurance

Independent policies from specialized insurers can cover the excess that the rental company’s own insurance leaves with you. Check that the policy is valid in the UAE, that it covers the class of car you rent, and what paperwork a claim needs.

Costs Beyond the Repair Bill

The repair bill is only one part of your potential liability. UAE traffic rules and rental agreements add a few costs that catch many renters off guard.

The Police Fine Everyone Forgets

When a minor accident involves another vehicle and the drivers agree who is responsible, Dubai Police fine the party found liable AED 520. This is a government charge, separate from any repair cost or excess payment, and it applies regardless of which company you rented from. If the drivers cannot agree who is to blame, they must call 999 and the police decide.

A scratch found on a parked car, with the other driver gone, is a different case: the report against an unknown party costs AED 510 in Dubai and stays valid for three months.

Loss of Use and Diminution of Value

Some rental agreements add charges on top of the repair itself. Loss of Use compensates the owner for rental income lost while the car is in the workshop. Diminution of Value compensates for the lower market value of a car with an accident on its history.

Whether either applies, how it is calculated and from which day is set by the contract, so read that clause before you sign. If a Loss of Use charge appears on your invoice, ask for the workshop’s documented repair timeframe instead of accepting a round number.

Alex Shvarov
Helpful tip

Before you sign any rental contract, ask which charges can follow damage and read that clause. If something is unclear, get the answer in writing.

Three Typical Scratch Scenarios in Dubai

How a scratch plays out depends on where it happened, who was involved and what your contract says. Repair cost depends on the panel, the material and the workshop, so ask for an itemized quote instead of accepting a blanket figure.

Scenario 1: Economy Sedan, Bumper Scratch

Vehicle: Mazda 6 (from AED 770 a day)
Damage: a 15 cm scratch on the rear bumper from parking contact

What to do:

  • Photograph the scratch, the plate and the surroundings, then send the photos to support
  • If another car was involved and you agree on fault, report through the Dubai Police app. If the car was hit while parked and the driver left, file an unknown-party report
  • Keep the report number: the excess in your contract and the insurance settle the rest

Scenario 2: Business SUV, Door Panel

Vehicle: BMW X5 (from AED 1070 a day)
Damage: a deep scratch on the driver’s door that needs a full panel respray

What to do:

  • Photograph the whole door, the panel edges and the car’s position in the parking space
  • Report the damage to support the same day and file the Police Report
  • Ask for the workshop estimate itemized per panel, with the repair timeframe in writing

Scenario 3: Supercar, Wheel Curb Damage

Vehicle: Ferrari F8 (from AED 3 710 a day)
Damage: a scrape on the front lip plus a gouge on an alloy wheel rim

What to do:

  • Photograph the rim from several angles and the curb that caused it
  • Report it immediately and file the Police Report
  • Ask the team whether extended insurance applies to your car before the next drive

Wheel damage is common: alloy wheels are easy to scuff in tight parking structures. If you are driving a Porsche 911 in Dubai, low-profile tires and large sport wheels need extra care around high curbs. On high-value cars, ask about extended insurance before you drive off.

Step 4: Handover, Billing and Disputes

How you handle the handover has a real effect on your final bill and on your options if you need to dispute it.

Best Practices for Damage Reporting

  • Report immediately: contact the rental company as soon as damage occurs, not just at return time
  • Share your documentation: photos, video and the Police Report reference number
  • Get written acknowledgment: an email confirming the report and the damage description
  • Never admit fault in writing: use neutral language like «Damage noted on [location]» rather than «I caused damage by…»

At Handover

  • Walk the car with the agent: don’t just drop the keys and leave
  • Review the damage report carefully: make sure the descriptions match reality and nothing pre-existing is attributed to you
  • Note any disagreement in writing: put it on the handover form before you sign
  • Ask for itemized estimates: request detailed repair quotes from certified body shops, not a blanket figure

Brook Drive: No Security Deposit

Close-up of a white Porsche 911 hood and headlight outdoors, part of the Brook Drive fleet

Brook Drive rents without a security deposit and without hidden payments. That means no money is held on your card after the rental and no waiting for a deposit to come back. If a car is damaged, the claim runs through the insurance included in the daily rate and the excess written in your contract. Browse our luxury cars and check the car page for the details of each model.

Disputing Unjustified Charges

If you believe the charges are inflated or incorrect:

  1. Request documentation: copies of repair invoices, inspection reports and photographic evidence
  2. Get an independent assessment: have a third-party body shop evaluate the damage and give a competing estimate
  3. File a formal complaint: in Dubai, through the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) Consumer Rights portal or the DET hotline +971 600 545555. DET handles complaints against companies that hold a Dubai trade licence
  4. Escalate if needed: the UAE Ministry of Economy runs a consumer-protection hotline on 800 1222

Consumer rights in the UAE are set by Federal Law No. 15 of 2020 on Consumer Protection, amended by Federal Decree-Law No. 5 of 2023. You have the right to fair treatment and accurate billing, but you still need evidence to back up your side.

Alex Shvarov
Verdict

Photos at pickup, photos at the scene, a Police Report and a written estimate: with these four in hand, any dispute starts from evidence rather than from the rental company’s word.

Ask a manager

Can I fix the scratch myself before returning the car?

No. A polish, touch-up pen or quick respray changes how the damage looks and makes it harder to show what happened. Report the damage as it is, and let the rental company arrange an authorized repair.

Do I really need a Police Report for a small scratch in Dubai?

Yes. At Brook Drive any damage, even a scratch on a parked car, needs a Police Report, and insurers normally ask for one before they pay a claim. In Dubai it takes a few minutes in the Dubai Police app or DubaiNow, and you do not need to call 999 for a cosmetic-only incident.

How much does a minor accident report cost?

In Dubai the party found liable pays a fine of AED 520. A report against an unknown party, for example a hit-and-run on a parked car, costs AED 510 and is valid for three months. These are government charges, separate from any repair cost or the excess in your rental agreement. Fees in other emirates differ.

Who do I call after a car accident in Dubai?

Call 999 for injuries, a major accident or a dispute about who is at fault. For a minor, cosmetic-only incident use the Dubai Police app or DubaiNow, and call 901 for non-urgent questions. Then contact Brook Drive support on +971 58 642 7299.

Is there a security deposit at Brook Drive?

No. Brook Drive rents without a security deposit and without a hold on your card. If a car is damaged, the claim runs through the insurance included in the daily rate and the excess written in your rental contract.

Will this affect my insurance rates back home?

Usually not. A rental damage claim goes through the rental company’s insurance, not your personal car policy. The exception is when you use your credit card’s rental cover or your own policy extends to rentals, so check with your insurer if you are unsure.

How to Avoid Scratches in the First Place

The best damage claim is the one that never happens. A few Dubai-specific habits go a long way:

  • Learn the parking sensors and cameras: modern vehicles have comprehensive systems, so get familiar with them before you enter a tight parking structure
  • Be cautious with mall valets: valets handle dozens of cars an hour with varying levels of care
  • Take end spots: park at the far edges of a lot where you have more clearance
  • Mind the curbs: Dubai’s high curbs and wheel stops catch low-profile cars
  • Watch for sandstorms: blowing sand and grit can scratch paint, so park somewhere covered during severe weather
  • Photograph before every drive: take fresh photos each time you use the car, not just at pickup

Conclusion

A scratch on a rental car does not have to become a financial disaster. Document it immediately with photos, file the Police Report through the right service, understand what your insurance actually covers, and keep every record until the final invoice.

If something happens with a Brook Drive car, call or message support on +971 58 642 7299. The team works 24/7, so you are never on your own.
