Dubai Speed Limits & Fines: Grace Periods and Regulations Explained

Dubai radars usually trigger about 20 km/h above the posted limit, but the exact figure is set road by road, and Abu Dhabi allows no buffer at all. Here are the thresholds, the 2026 fines and how to pay a ticket.

Dubai’s Radar Buffer: What the Official Table Says

Dubai Police publishes a «Radar Control» figure for every road on its Street Speed Limits page. On most main roads it is the posted limit plus 21 km/h, which is the «20 km/h buffer» drivers talk about. On Sheikh Zayed Road, where the sign reads 100 km/h, the radar figure is 121 km/h.

Posted limit and radar control figure (km/h) for five major Dubai roads, as listed on the Dubai Police Street Speed Limits page in October 2026
Road Posted limit Radar control figure
Sheikh Zayed Road 120 / 100 141 / 121
Al Khail Road 100 121
Emirates Road 110 131
Mohammad Bin Zayed Road 110 131
Al Ittihad Road 100 / 80 121 / 101

Three cautions go with that table. The gap is not identical everywhere: the same page lists some 60 km/h stretches at 91 km/h. A road that is not in the table has no published figure, so treat its sign as the limit. And the buffer is not permission: Gulf News (October 2026) stresses that it should not be treated as permission to exceed the posted limit, and the sign stays the legal limit.

Limits are also moving. From November 2026 Dubai changes the limit on sections of five roads: Al Asayel Street rises from 60 to 80 km/h, Al Mustaqbal Street and Latifa bint Hamdan Street from 60 to 70, while Al Rebat Street falls from 100 to 90 and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street from 80 to 70 (Gulf News, October 2026). The report gives no radar figures for these roads, so drive to the new signs.

Cars for Long Highway Drives

On a long, flat highway the easy mistake is to creep up without noticing. A stable, comfortable car helps, and cruise control, where the car has it, is the simplest way to hold a chosen number.

Daily rates and minimum age / driving experience for three cars suited to long highway drives
Model 1-2 days 30+ days Min. age / experience
BMW X5 AED 1070 AED 650 23 / 3 years
AUDI RS6 AED 1 430 AED 950 25 / 3 years
Mercedes S500 Black AED 2 150 AED 1 430 25 / 5 years

Prices are per day and update with the live rates. Age and experience requirements are set per car, so check the car page before you book.

Speeding Fines, Black Points and Confiscation

Once a driver clears the radar figure, the penalty system is tiered and gets serious quickly. The fine is only part of the cost: from 51 km/h over, the ticket also brings black points and a vehicle impound.

2026 Penalty Schedule

Dubai speeding fines, black points and vehicle impound by how far over the limit, per Dubai Police and Gulf News (October 2026)
Exceeding the limit by Fine Black points Vehicle impound
Up to 20 km/h AED 300 – –
Up to 30 km/h AED 600 – –
Up to 40 km/h AED 700 – –
Up to 50 km/h AED 1,000 – –
Up to 60 km/h AED 1,500 6 15 days
More than 60 km/h AED 2,000 12 30 days
More than 80 km/h AED 3,000 23 60 days

Dubai Police lists these tiers as exceeding the maximum speed limit by a given margin, while Gulf News describes them as measured over the applicable enforcement limit. If you need to know how a particular ticket was calculated, ask Dubai Police on 901. Driving below the minimum speed set for a road is a violation too: AED 480 and 4 black points.

Black points are recorded against the driver, not the car. At 24 points the case goes to the traffic court, which may suspend or confiscate the licence (Khaleej Times). That is a different problem from a one-off fine, so the step from «up to 50 km/h» to «up to 60 km/h», where points first appear, is the one worth respecting most. The full list of violations and points is in the Dubai Police black points table.

Brook Drive rentals come with no deposit. A speeding fine issued during your rental is forwarded to you and paid after the rental ends. If the car is impounded because of a violation during the rental, the release fee and related costs are the renter’s responsibility under the rental agreement (see the rental terms).

Drivers of high-performance cars have the least room for error, because 20 km/h over the limit arrives in a moment in something like the Ferrari F8, the Lamborghini Huracan or the Porsche 911 Turbo S. All of them, and the rest of our sport cars lineup, are rented for public-road driving.

School Zones and Residential Streets

Posted limits drop where people are on foot, and the radar figures in the Dubai Police table cover only the roads listed there. In a school zone or on a residential street, treat the number on the sign as the limit. Failing to stop when a school bus has its STOP sign activated is a separate violation: AED 1,200 and 10 black points.

Cars for City and School-Run Driving

Daily rates and minimum age / driving experience for three cars suited to city streets and the school run
Model 1-2 days 30+ days Min. age / experience
Mazda 6 Dark Blue AED 770 AED 530 21 / 3 years
Mini Cooper S Convertible AED 590 AED 350 21 / 3 years
Chevrolet Tahoe Beige AED 830 AED 590 23 / 3 years

The Mini is the compact pick for tight residential streets, the Mazda 6 is an easy everyday sedan, and the Tahoe gives a family more room. All three sit in our economy cars range, and child seats are free on every booking. If a quiet school run matters more than the fuel stop, our Tesla line-up is worth a look too.

Start slowing as soon as you see the school-zone sign, not when you spot a camera. Near schools, drive to the number on the sign and leave the radar figure out of it.

Fog and Rain: Follow the Signs

Fog changes the limit that matters, and it is the one on the display. In October 2026 fog alerts covered Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Drivers in Abu Dhabi received alerts that limits had been lowered to 80 km/h, and Abu Dhabi Police urged them to follow the changing limits on electronic information boards. Dubai Police reminded motorists to reduce speed in line with road conditions (The National, October 2026).

Poor visibility also has its own fines in the Dubai Police table: driving in fog without lights costs AED 500 and 4 black points, and so does driving in fog in breach of the authorities’ instructions. Fog is most common in the cooler months and mainly early in the morning, so the risk is highest on early highway drives from around November to March.

Helpful tip

In fog or heavy rain, read the overhead electronic board. If it shows a lower number than the fixed sign further down the road, drive to the board.

Dubai vs Abu Dhabi: No Buffer in the Capital

The single most important difference for anyone driving between emirates: Abu Dhabi has run a zero-tolerance speeding system since 2018 (Gulf News). There is no cushion. The number on the sign is the legal limit, so on a 100 km/h sign, 101 km/h is already speeding. Fines run from AED 300 to AED 3,000, depending on how far over the limit you are.

The gap got wider in September 2026, when Abu Dhabi Mobility cut the limit on about 6 km of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road (E311), between Tawi Al Qaymah Street and Al Khayr Street, from 120 to 100 km/h in both directions. The new number carries no buffer either, while Dubai publishes radar figures above the posted limit on many of its roads.

SUVs for the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Run

Daily rates and minimum age / driving experience for SUVs suited to the Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway drive
Model 1-2 days 30+ days Min. age / experience
Nissan Patrol LE Platinum City AED 1070 AED 650 23 / 3 years
Cadillac Escalade Black M AED 1190 AED 770 25 / 3 years
Range Rover HSE Vogue AED 1 910 AED 1 310 25 / 3 years

The run to Abu Dhabi is long enough that comfort matters. The Land Rover Range Rover is the most upmarket of these three and sits alongside the rest of our luxury cars for anyone who wants that level of comfort. Any of our SUV’s works for the trip.

Reset your cruise control as soon as you see the Abu Dhabi boundary signs. Do not carry a Dubai speed across the line and assume the buffer travels with you.

How to Check and Pay a Dubai Traffic Fine

Speeding tickets in Dubai come from Dubai Police, and the system is fully digital. These are the official channels:

  • Dubai Police website: Fines Inquiry and Payment. Search by vehicle plate, driving licence or traffic code, pay, request a Violation Review, or view the radar photo under Violation Evidence Images.
  • Dubai Police app: the same service on iOS and Android.
  • RTA: the public fines search and the RTA Dubai app for iOS and Android cover fines issued by RTA.
  • DubaiNow: its Pay All Fines service lists eligible fines linked to an Emirates ID, with sign-in through UAE Pass, so it mainly suits residents.

Each violation paid through Dubai Police carries two AED 10 service fees. Online payments accept cards issued in the UAE and GCC only, so a visitor with a card from elsewhere may be unable to pay online. At Brook Drive, rentals come with no deposit, and a fine issued during your rental is forwarded to you and paid after the rental ends.

Verdict

Dubai’s radar buffer is real on the roads where the Dubai Police table lists it, but it is not permission to speed, and Abu Dhabi has none. Near schools and in fog the sign is the limit. Drive to the sign, not to the habit.

Does the 20 km/h buffer apply on every Dubai road?

No. Dubai Police publishes a radar control figure for each road it lists, usually the posted limit plus 21 km/h, and a few 60 km/h stretches are listed at 91. For roads that are not in the table, and for school zones and residential streets, treat the posted number as the limit. In Abu Dhabi there is no buffer at all.

What happens if I get black points during my rental?

Black points are recorded against the driver, not against Brook Drive or the car. At 24 points the case goes to the traffic court, which may order the licence to be suspended or confiscated for a period. That is a more serious problem than the fine itself.

How does Brook Drive handle a speeding fine from my rental?

Brook Drive rentals come with no deposit. If a fine is issued during your rental, it is forwarded to you and paid after the rental ends.

Can I dispute a Dubai speeding fine?

Yes, you can ask for a review. The Dubai Police Fines Inquiry and Payment service includes a Violation Review request, which asks Dubai Police to reassess the accuracy of the recorded details, and a Violation Evidence Images service that shows the radar photo.

Does the Dubai buffer still apply once I cross into Abu Dhabi?

No. Abu Dhabi enforces zero tolerance, so the number on the sign is the limit. Since September 2026 about 6 km of the E311 carries a lower 100 km/h limit, again with no buffer. Reset your cruise control when you cross the emirate boundary.
