Red Light Violations Compared: Germany vs. Dubai – What’s Different?

A red light costs AED 1,200, 12 black points and a 30-day impound in Dubai, plus AED 60,000 to release the car. In Germany it is EUR 90 to 360 and one or two points. Here is the full comparison.

Germany vs Dubai: The Red Light Comparison

Dubai is a popular destination, and a rented sedan is one of the easiest ways to see it. A red light is where the two systems differ most. Germany treats it as a graded traffic offence with fines of EUR 90 to 360. Dubai treats it as a serious violation with a fixed fine, black points and an impound. The table puts them side by side for a car driver.

Red light penalties for a car driver in Germany and Dubai, with euro amounts at late October 2026 rates
Item Germany Dubai
Basic red light EUR 90 and 1 point (red for up to 1 second) AED 1,200 (about EUR 245) and 12 black points
Serious cases EUR 200 to 360, 2 points and a 1-month driving ban (red for more than 1 second, or danger, or damage) Same tier: the Dubai Police table has no split by how long the light was red
The car No impound or release fee in the catalogue entries Impounded for 30 days, then AED 60,000 (about EUR 12,200) to release it
Licence limit 8 points: licence withdrawn 24 black points: the traffic court may suspend or confiscate the licence
First offence in total EUR 90 to 360 AED 61,200 (about EUR 12,500)

The euro figures use about 4.09 AED per euro, which follows from the European Central Bank’s euro reference rate for late October 2026 and the dirham’s fixed rate to the US dollar. Exchange rates move, so treat them as a guide to scale.

Verdict

The headline difference is not the AED 1,200 fine, which is about EUR 245. It is the 12 black points and the AED 50,000 release fee on top of it, which have no counterpart in the German catalogue.

How Germany Punishes a Red Light

Germany grades the offence by how long the light had been red and whether anyone was endangered. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) publishes the points, and the national fine catalogue (Bußgeldkatalog) sets the standard fine and the driving ban.

The Bußgeldkatalog Entries for a Car Driver

German standard rates for running a red light in a car, entries 132 to 132.3.2 of the fine catalogue
Entry Offence Fine Points Driving ban
132 Red light ignored EUR 90 1 –
132.1 With danger to others EUR 200 2 1 month
132.2 With property damage EUR 240 2 1 month
132.3 Red for more than 1 second EUR 200 2 1 month
132.3.1 More than 1 second, with danger EUR 320 2 1 month
132.3.2 More than 1 second, with damage EUR 360 2 1 month

The one-second line is the key German idea: a light that has just turned red is a «simple» offence at EUR 90 and one point, while a light that has been red for longer than a second brings EUR 200, two points and a one-month driving ban. The catalogue entries list a fine, points and a driving ban. They do not include a vehicle impound or a release fee.

Points go into the Fahreignungsregister kept in Flensburg. A single point is deleted after two and a half years and two points after five years, according to the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMV). The register works in steps:

  • 1 to 3 points: the offence is recorded and nothing else happens.
  • 4 to 5 points: a warning letter (Ermahnung) from the licensing authority.
  • 6 to 7 points: a formal caution (Verwarnung) that the next step costs the licence.
  • 8 points or more: the licence is withdrawn, once the earlier steps have been taken.

A voluntary driver-fitness seminar can remove one point, but only for drivers who have five points or fewer, and only once in five years.

The one-second line is a German idea. In Dubai, treat every red light as a full stop, whatever the timing.

What a Red Light Costs in Dubai

Dubai Police publish a table of violations with fines, black points and impound days. For a red light the table is short: one fine for light vehicles and motorbikes, a heavier one for heavy vehicles.

Dubai Police Penalties for Jumping a Red Signal

Dubai red light penalties by vehicle type, per the Dubai Police black points table
Vehicle Fine Black points Impound
Light vehicle (a rental car) AED 1,000 12 30 days
Motorcycle AED 1,000 12 30 days
Heavy vehicle AED 3,000 and the licence frozen for one year – –

The table does not distinguish a light that has just changed from one that has been red for a while. Jumping the signal is one offence.

The AED 1,200 is only the start. Under Dubai’s Decree No. 30 of 2023, driving through a red light is a ground for mandatory impound, and the vehicle is released only on payment of AED 60,000. The decree places that payment on the vehicle’s owner. For a non-UAE national driving a heavy vehicle through a red light, it also provides for administrative deportation.

Black points are recorded against the driver. At 24 points the case goes to the traffic court, which may suspend or confiscate the licence (Khaleej Times). One red light is therefore half of the limit on its own.

Treat amber as a signal to stop. The RTA driver handbook, as quoted by Gulf News, tells drivers to stop safely at amber and not to accelerate to beat the light. A flashing yellow means extra caution, because it can indicate a malfunction.

What It Means in a Rental Car

Dubai Police register violations against a vehicle plate, a driving licence or a traffic code, so a camera does not care whether the car is yours or rented. What changes in a rental is who deals with the paperwork and the costs.

Brook Drive rentals come with no deposit. A fine issued during your rental is forwarded to you and paid after the rental ends. Tourists rent with a passport, a licence from their home country and an International Driving Permit, residents with a UAE licence and Emirates ID. The same rules apply to every car in the fleet, from an economy sedan to a luxury one such as the Mercedes S-Class.

If the car is impounded because of a violation during the rental, the release fee and related costs are the renter’s responsibility under the rental agreement (see the rental terms).

How to Check, Pay or Challenge a Dubai Fine

Dubai’s fine system is digital and runs through the Dubai Police. These are the official channels:

  • Dubai Police website: Fines Inquiry and Payment. Search by vehicle plate, driving licence or traffic code, pay, ask for a Violation Review, or view the radar photo under Violation Evidence Images.
  • Dubai Police app: the same service on iOS and Android.
  • RTA: the public fines search covers fines issued by the Roads and Transport Authority. A red-light ticket comes from Dubai Police, so start there.

Each violation paid through Dubai Police carries two AED 10 service fees. The Violation Review service asks Dubai Police to reassess the accuracy of the recorded details, so check the photo and the plate before you pay.

Dubai Police accept online payments only with cards issued in the UAE or GCC countries. A visitor with a card from elsewhere should not count on paying online.

How much is a red light fine in Dubai compared with Germany?

In Dubai a car driver pays AED 1,200, receives 12 black points and the car is impounded for 30 days. In Germany the standard fine runs from EUR 90 to EUR 360, with one or two points and, from EUR 200 upwards, a one-month driving ban.

Is a red light fine in Dubai really AED 50,000?

The fine itself is AED 1,000. The AED 50,000 is the payment required to release the impounded vehicle under Decree No. 30 of 2023, and the decree places it on the vehicle’s owner. Together with the fine, one red light can cost AED 51,000.

Do Dubai black points work like points in Germany?

Both systems record points against the driver and both lead to a licence measure at a threshold. In Germany the licence is withdrawn at 8 points. In Dubai the traffic court decides at 24 black points, and a single red light carries 12.

Who pays if my rental car is impounded for a red light?

If the car is impounded because of a violation during the rental, the release fee and related costs are the renter’s responsibility under the rental agreement.

What happens to a fine I receive during a Brook Drive rental?

Brook Drive rentals come with no deposit. A fine issued during your rental is forwarded to you and paid after the rental ends.
